Identifying Your Boating License Category: Sea or Inland

When you conduct a search or request a duplicate navigation license, it's essential to accurately identify your license to avoid any errors. Depending on its issue date and denomination, the prerogatives as well as the license's format (size, color) may vary.

Marine license identification

  • Before March 15, 1966: Engine driving license

Red color, two panels

Recognized as equivalent to the current "offshore" extension

  • From March 15, 1966 to December 31, 1992: License A, B or C

Light or dark orange color, three panels

  • From January 1, 1993 to December 31, 2007: Sea card, coastal or offshore sea license

White laminated card

  • Since January 1, 2008: "Coastal" option or "offshore" extension

Light blue color, three panels, laminated

Identification of an inland waterway license

  • Before January 1, 1991: Inland Waterway Driving License

Blue or green, two-part

Equivalent to the C and S capacity certificates

  • From July 1, 1991 to December 31, 2007: C, S or PP Capacity Certificate

Pink, two-part

  • Since January 1, 2008: "Inland waterway" option or "inland waterway large pleasure craft" endorsement
